Substrate Selection by Field Strength
Substrate Df directly affects coil Q-factor and MRI SNR. At 64MHz (1.5T), RO4350B (Df 0.0037) produces acceptable substrate loss. At 298MHz (7T), RO3003 (Df 0.0010) is required — RO4350B substrate loss at 298MHz degrades coil Q measurably. Why ENIG for MRI RF Coil PCB
ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) is the standard surface finish for MRI RF coil PCB for three reasons: flat surface maintains trace dimensional accuracy for resonant frequency precision; no lead content for patient-contact biocompatibility; and uniform gold surface provides consistent solderability for capacitor placement around the coil loop. HASL produces surface roughness that affects conductor Q at RF frequencies and should not be specified for coil PCBs. ENEPIG is available where wire bonding or additional biocompatibility requirements apply.
